My Network Companion: The ProfiShark

Since a couple of months, I am carrying a ProfiShark 1G always with me. It’s a small network aggregation TAP that fits into my bag (unlike almost any other TAPs or switches with SPAN functionalities). It runs solely via USB 3.0, hence no additional power supply nor network port on my laptop is required to get it running.

In this post, I’ll give some hints on how to use the ProfiShark 1G with Windows (read: some initial problems I had and how to solve them) as well as some use cases out of my daily work with it.

10 € Flightradar24-Stick (ADS-B via DVB-T)

Mir macht das Basteln mit Computertechnik ja vor allem dann Spaß, wenn über Hardware irgendwelche Daten fließen, die man dann per Software auswerten kann. Zum Beispiel Temperatur-Sensoren oder GPS- & WLAN-Empfänger. Auch das Empfangen von ADS-B Signalen von Flugzeugen, wie es vor allem von Flightradar24.com ausgewertet wird, hat mich sehr interessiert. Als ich neulich auf deren Homepage gelesen habe, dass man nicht mehrere hundert Euro für einen Empfänger ausgeben muss, sondern für wenig Geld einen einfachen DVB-T Stick benutzen kann, schlug ich sofort zu. Measuring Temperatures with PCsensor’s TEMPerHUM Sensor

I am always interested in capturing real values via hardware devices in order to generate the appropriate graphs with my monitoring system. Of course, the outside temperature in our city was at the pole position for such a project. Therefore I ordered a few temperature/humidity sensors from PCsensor (via eBay), plugged them via USB on my Raspberry Pi (Raspbian Linux), and queried them via SNMP from my MRTG/Routers2 monitoring server.
